Bellamy ousts McGuffin to make quarters
LOS ANGELES, CA - Another match, another upset in men’s singles at the Veolia LA Open presented by Deep Eddy Vodka.
No. 23 seed Roscoe Bellamy took down No. 4 seed Tyson McGuffin 11-6, 11-8 in the Round of 16.
Going into the match, the former UCLA tennis player just wanted to keep things simple.
“I wanted to serve big, play big, and compete with a lot of energy,” he said.
That’s certainly what he did, earning several points from his powerful serves that consistently forced return errors from McGuffin.
Bellamy is into his first career PPA quarterfinal with this win, and he knows how much a run like this can mean for his career going forward.
“Tyson was one of those guys who really took me under his wing when I first started playing,” he shared. “I really wanted to get that breakthrough, and this one’s big for me for sure.”
Bellamy will next face No. 18 seed Ryan Sherry.
