C. Johns calls out Alshon for "classless comments" as Johns bros advance to men's doubles final
Ben and Collin Johns defeated Christian Alshon and Riley Newman 11-9, 11-2 in their men’s doubles semifinal matchup, but the story of the match comes from an altercation that happened right after play concluded.
As all four players shook hands, C. Johns exchanged some words with Alshon.
He revealed in an interview that Saturday's encounter had its start a few weeks ago at the Las Vegas Pickleball Cup.
“I was asking him if he had any more classless comments like he did when he won the match against us in Las Vegas,” C. Johns explained. “He had some words that I can’t repeat. So, what goes around comes around, and if you dish, you’d better be ready to deal. If you don’t like that, too bad. Try to beat me next time.”
Alshon and Newman won that last encounter 11-5, 9-11, 12-10 in one of the most thrilling matches of the year.
And just a few weeks before that, Alshon and his Texas Ranchers teammate Quang Duong defeated the familial tandem to take gold at the Bristol Open.
Those results—paired with he and Duong's 25-13 rout of the Johns bros at MLP Salt Lake City in July—don’t have Alshon too worried going forward.
When asked for comment, his response was short and sweet: "Let's see what happens the next time we play."
