Devilliers rallies, moves into semis
PHOENIX, AZ - The past two times Jay Devilliers has played Chris Haworth in singles, Haworth has gotten the better of him.
And it looked like the same thing might happen Thursday, as Devilliers gave up a late lead to drop the first game, 9-11.
From there, though, some key adjustments allowed the ‘Flying Frenchman’ to cruise and take the final two games 11-1, 11-2.
One key adjustment came from his serve.
“He [Haworth] was doing a great job at returning well and putting a lot of pressure on me with the return," Devilliers shared with Pickleball TV's Michelle McMahon. "I started mixing up the pace and placement on my serve, which led to some more unforced errors and shorter returns, and that gave me a little more room to work with."
With this win, the No. 6 seed is one step closer to claiming his first PPA singles medal since April 2023.
He’ll face Jaume Martinez Vich, who beat No. 1 seed Ben Johns in three games, in the semifinals.
