Frazier battles back for first singles gold
PALM SPRINGS, CA - After watching his final drive land inside the baseline of Humana Championship Court at the PPA Masters, Dylan Frazier looked up at the sky and breathed a sigh of relief.
He was a men’s singles champion for the first time.
At multiple points throughout match against Federico Staksrud, though, it looked like that wouldn’t be the case.
Staksrud came out on fire, quickly taking Game 1 11-2. It was so quick that the No. 10 seeded Frazier hardly had time to settle into the match.
That would come eventually, though as Frazier found his groove to take Game 2, 11-7.
Before he knew it, though, he was trailing 3-9 in the deciding game, just two points from defeat.
They key to coming back? Putting the score line out of his mind.
“I was just trying to stay focused on every single point and play like it was 0-0,” he shared.
Frazier also relied on his proficiency in doubles to win points at the kitchen line.
“Doubles helps the singles game a lot,” he said. “It’s especially helpful for that initial volley on your opponent’s third shot because you have to use that fourth shot to get ahead in early in the point.”
He would rally to take that third game 11-9 to secure his first pro single title.
