Game 3 rally propels Staksrud, Patriquin into men’s doubles final
ROSEVILLE, CA - Saturday has seen an unprecedented number of new pairings in men’s doubles, but only one will compete for gold on Championship Sunday: Federico Staksrud and Hayden Patriquin.
The No. 4 seeds grinded out a dramatic 6-11, 11-4, 11-8 victory over Riley Newman and Gabriel Tardio to book their spot in the final.
Even though both players traditionally play the left side with other partners, they found success having Staksrud on the left and Patriquin on the right.
That structure allowed Staksrud to dictate patterns with his cutting slice backhanded dink crosscourt to Newman, while Patriquin regularly showcased his hand speed with well-timed counters.
Things weren’t looking good for the tandem in Game 3, though, when they faced an early 1-5 deficit.
After a timeout, however, they turned the tide and built up a 6-5 lead before teams switched sides.
Despite some tense moments, including a long stalemate at 7-8, Staksrud and Patriquin eventually closed it out 11-8 to secure the triumph.
“We have really good chemistry, and we’ve always gotten along off the court,” Staksrud said of the partnership. “When we were down, I told Hayden to just focus on keeping positive energy no matter what, and good things came from that.”
With the win, Patriquin is into his first PPA Tour final. The 18-year-old currently has three bronze medals and will have the chance to add a gold to his collection.
The pair will take on either No. 1 seeds JW Johnson and Dylan Frazier or No. 3 seeds Tyson McGuffin and Dekel Bar in the final.
