Haworth, Goldin surge into Round of 16 behind power pickleball
SAN CLEMENTE, CA - Chris Haworth and Grayson Goldin don’t play a traditional brand of pickleball doubles, but that doesn’t mean it’s not effective.
The No. 41 seeds booked their spots in the Round of 16 with an 11-1, 11-9 victory over No. 11 seeds Wyatt Stone and Callan Dawson to continue their run that began in Monday’s qualifying draw.
The pair’s brand of pickleball is basically a power game on steroids, reliant on massive serves to force return errors, devastating drives to create ‘shake and bake’ chances, and unpredictable speedups to pressure opponents during dink rallies.
All three played a key role in the tandem’s victory Wednesday evening.
“We bring a lot of power,” shared Goldin, a former collegiate tennis player at the University of South Florida. “A lot of people will say that this isn’t pickleball, but in my opinion it’s the new pickleball. A lot of guys are gonna come in ripping balls, and it’s something that you’ve gotta adjust to.”
That power game comes from the singles court, where Goldin and Haworth are also excelling in southern California; both won their Round of 32 matches earlier on Wednesday.
Next up for the duo is a faceoff against No. 5 seeds Hayden Patriquin and Pablo Tellez with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line.
