Jansen outlasts Devidze to claim second singles title of 2024
ROCKWALL, TX - Before Sunday, Lea Jansen and Salome Devidze had faced off twice in 2024.
Both of those matches were bronze medal matches, and both went three games.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise, then, that their matchup for women’s singles gold at the CIBC Texas Open powered by TIXR went to three games, too.
Devidze came out the stronger of the two and raced out to a 9-4 lead in Game 1, and she eventually closed it out, 11-9.
The former Georgian tennis pro got to the kitchen early and often in that first game and kept Jansen on the run in most rallies.
The tide changed from there, though, as it was Jansen who had success finishing points at the kitchen line thanks to her ability to absorb the pace of Devidze’s drives and change direction with her own shots.
She took Game 2 11-7 and continued to raise her level, dominantly taking Game 3 11-2 to secure the triumph.
Jansen credits the victory to her new partnership with coach Mike Wolf, who also coaches the New York Hustlers in Major League Pickleball.
“Mike is my MLP coach, and I secretly really wanted to hire him to help me out with singles, and here we are,” she shared. “I spent a week in Kansas City, and he and his wife Ashley completely reformed my game, and I’m just really thankful for them. [Mike’s] the one coach that has been able to deal with me.”
This win gives Jansen her second singles title of 2024 after her gold medal at the Veolia Houston Open in April.
