Johns bros dominate to take men’s doubles gold
ATASCOCITA, TX - Ben and Collin Johns came to play on Championship Sunday. They breezed past No. 3 seeds Federico Staksrud and Pablo Tellez 11-0, 11-2, 11-2 to earn the men’s doubles title at the Veolia Houston Open.
The brothers knew the threat that Staksrud and Tellez posed to them with two forehands in the middle, so they were looking for a strong start in Game 1.
And that’s exactly what they found, earning a pickle (11-0 victory) over their opponents in just ten minutes and thirty-two seconds under the warm Texas sun.
“They’ve come really close to beating us in similar conditions to this, so we came in really focused and not wanting to take anything for granted,” said Collin.
The top seeds didn’t let up from there, allowing only four points total throughout the entire match.
“I think we did a good job of keeping our focus because we know how quickly a match can turn.”
This win gives the brothers their 30th gold medal together, and Ben’s second title of Championship Sunday. He also won mixed doubles gold alongside Etta Wright.
