Johns rallies past McGuffin for men’s singles title
DALLAS, TX - Championship Sunday feels a little different with no players competing for a Triple Crown, but Ben Johns playing for and winning a singles title brings back a bit of that familiar feeling.
Johns took on No. 3 seed Tyson McGuffin, who is one of only two men to beat him in singles on Championship Sunday on the PPA Tour.
It didn’t happen again at the Hertz Gold Cup, however.
After the top seed took game 1, McGuffin responded admirably with his one-handed backhand crosscourt dinks and trademark ‘Ferrari Forehands’ to take the second 11-6 and force a decisive third game.
It was all Johns from there, though. He won the third game 11-3 to claim his 10th gold medal in singles this season.
This victory marked another milestone for the world No. 1: 200 career singles wins.
Even with all these wins and almost a decade of singles under his belt, Johns kept it short and sweet when asked about his future in the event.
“It’s been seven years, and I’m not stopping now,” he said.
