Johnson, Frazier strike gold at Pictona
DALLAS, TX - Coming into the Hertz Gold Cup, JW Johnson and Dylan Frazier had reached four consecutive men’s doubles finals.
They had four silver medals to show for it.
So, you can imagine how motivated they were to win the title playing against the dark horse duo of Christian Alshon and Connor Garnett on Sunday.
The No. 2 seeds had their work cut out for them, though, as their opponents threatened with Alshon’s backhand punch through the middle and Garnett’s two-handed backhand crosscourt roll dink from the left side.
By relying on what are arguably the fastest hands on tour to win hands battles, though, Johnson and Frazier walked away unscathed with a 11-8, 11-9, 11-4 victory.
The 21-year-old Johnson credited his and Frazier’s ability to stay patient and wait for opportunities to speed the ball up instead of forcing it.
“They weren’t making many unforced errors and were attacking a lot, so we had to really take our chances and be patient,” he explained.
This win nets Johnson and Frazier their fifth gold medal of the season.
