Smith, Loyd overcome Game 3 deficit to advance in men’s doubles
It looked like Michael Loyd and Spencer Smith’s time in the men’s doubles draw was coming to an end.
The No. 17 seeds were trailing qualifiers Davis Daniel Carvalho and Brandon Fritze 5-10 in the deciding game of their Round of 64 clash, but they staved off one match point to regain the serve.
They wouldn’t face another match point from there.
With the serve on Loyd’s paddle, Loyd and Smith reeled off seven points in a row—briefly paused by a defensive timeout from their opponents at 10-10—to escape with the win.

For Loyd, the impressive comeback began with the right mentality.
“It’s about showing up and being a professional,” he said. “You’re here for a reason. A lot of people would love to be in this situation, and it’s about taking that truth and using it to fuel you.”
This was the pairing’s first match together, and Smith expects the momentum from Tuesday’s triumph to carry over into their other matches this week in Atlanta.
“It’s huge to get that first win,” he mentioned. “I think tomorrow we’ll play even better as we continue to get used to each other.”
We’ll see if that rings true when they face No. 14 seeds Julian Arnold and Hunter Johnson on Wednesday with a spot in the Round of 16 on the line.
