Sock impresses in 2024 debut, but tougher foes await Thursday
PALM SPRINGS, CA - Jack Sock had a successful start to the 2024 season Wednesday, coming away with wins in men’s doubles and men’s singles.
He and Collin Shick took on the No. 23 seeded team of Quang Duong and Pesa Teoni, pulling it out 12-10, 11-6.
The competition didn’t necessarily like a typical doubles match, though, with speed ups and hands battles outnumbering dink rallies at the kitchen line.
A much tougher matchup awaits the tandem in the Round of 16 Thursday: No. 4 seeds Riley Newman and Thomas Wilson, who won a silver medal together at December’s PPA Finals.
In singles, the four-time Grand Slam champion took down qualifier Mohaned Alhouni 11-8, 11-4 to book his spot in the Round of 16 and set an enticing matchup with No. 4 seed Connor Garnett.
