Staksrud, Patriquin earn first men’s doubles title together
ROSEVILLE, CA - There was a lot at stake in the men’s doubles gold medal match in the California capital.
Hayden Patriquin was playing in his first PPA gold medal match, and both he and Federico Staksrud were looking to earn their first men’s doubles titles.
JW Johnson and Dylan Frazier, on the other hand, were looking to earn their fourth consecutive men’s doubles gold, a mark that would tie a record set by Ben and Collin Johns.
When all was said and done, it was Patriquin and Staksrud who won the day with an impressive 11-7, 11-7 11-0 victory over the top seeds.
“I’m lost for words right now,” Patriquin said of earning his first PPA title. “It feels great to finally be here and get the gold. I’ve been working hard, and I’m glad I could do it with Fed.”
Staksrud was nothing but complimentary of the tandem’s opponents, who hadn’t lost a match together at a PPA event since March.
“It’s been an amazing run for JW and Dylan,” he said. “They’re probably the best team in the world right now, and they’re gonna keep on winning titles. Part of me being here lifting the trophy is because of them.”
Staksrud will go for his second gold medal of the day when he and Johnson face off again in men’s singles.
In the bronze medal match, No. 3 seeds Tyson McGuffin and Dekel Bar beat No. 6 seeds Riley Newman and Gabriel Tardio 2-11, 12-10, 11-6.
