Waters, Johns cruise into mixed doubles final
BRISTOL, TN - Anna Leigh Waters and Ben Johns are into their eleventh mixed doubles final of 2024 after an 11-6, 11-0 victory over No. 4 seeds Tina Pisnik and Dekel Bar.
The match was tight out of the gate, but Waters used a challenge at 6-6 in Game 1 as a chance to make some tactical adjustments that would completely change the direction of the contest.
“I talked to my mom and decided to just be more aggressive, and I think Ben somehow knew what I was going for,” she shared. “That’s when we play our best, when we’re aggressive and really dictating points.”
Part of what worked for the top seeds was directing their shots to the outside foot of Bar to mitigate his ability to control the middle third of the court at the kitchen line. That forced some higher dinks from Bar that they were able to take advantage of.
After that brief pause at 6-6 in the opening game, Waters and Johns went on to score the match’s final sixteen points to secure the win.
On Championship Sunday, they will face the winner of the second semifinal pitting No. 2 seeds Anna Bright and Christian Alshon against No. 14 seeds Jackie Kawamoto and Jaume Martinez Vich.
